Weather Station Notes - Birch Grove

back to Weather Station

Records start on 15/12/2015

6/2/2021 Just added wind, but early days, as the sensors are too near the house and trees, so the data will be compromised. Hopefully I will get the sensors reloacated to the chimney stack when I am confident it is working properly!!

A better temperature probe housing may still be required with a fan to reduce direct sunlight heating effect.

18/2/2021 Added 20mm of rain for 8/2/2021 to compensate for the 23mm of snow that fell, but got blown off the rain guage.

As of 22/12/2020 rain measurements are multiplied by a factor of 1/.85 as a measurement of the rain guage capture area and an experiment to pour in the equivalent of 10mm of rain only gave a reading 0f 8.4 mm. The capture area is 11cm x 5cm. Area = 55 sq cm. So 1 cm of rain should be 55 cu cm or 55gm of water.

New temperature sensor on 15/12/2020 as the old one stopped working - don't know why.

16/03/18 - The temperature sensor is now mounted in a better temperature measuring housing(the one from the Maplin weather station) that should be less sensitive to sunshine.

Amospheric pressure added 30/4/2016.

The rain guage is ~2.6m from the back wall of the house at about 1.3m off the ground. This is NOT optimal. The temperature sensor (DS18B20) is attached under the rain guage in free air but sheltered from the sun. It does however still suffer from significant solar heating effect - to be improved. The pressure sensor is a BMP180 attached to the i2c bus on the raspberry pi
